MSP buying signals: what public evidence can and cannot tell you
Learn how to interpret MSP DNS changes, partner pages, hiring and acquisition news without turning observations into unsupported buying-intent claims.
A signal is a reason to investigate
An MSP buying signal is an observed event that may make a sales conversation relevant. It is not proof of budget, dissatisfaction or an active evaluation. Useful signals have a source, a date and a clear explanation of what was observed, with any inference labeled separately.
Before writing outreach, ask three questions: what changed, where did the evidence come from, and what alternative explanation fits? The answer determines whether to research further, ask a question or leave the account alone.
DNS shows configuration, not motivation
MX records describe mail routing. SPF records authorize senders. DMARC records publish policy and reporting information. A change can reflect a provider migration, but it can also follow configuration work. An authorization for a PSA or RMM domain alone is insufficient to establish that a company is an MSP or actively uses that tool.
Record the exact observation and date. Treat a removed gateway as a change in what is visible, rather than proof that the company has no protection. Microsoft routing can coexist with security products that are not exposed in MX records. Unknown should remain unknown.
Websites, hiring and news add context
An MSP's partner page shows the vendors it publicly advertises. It does not establish current contract status, revenue or the products deployed across clients. A job posting that names a tool may describe current operations, a future plan or a skill the employer values.
An acquisition announcement can establish an announced transaction; a domain redirect alone cannot. Redirects can follow a rebrand or website migration. Keep these evidence types distinct so an attractive story does not become an unsupported fact in a rep's opening line.
Turn evidence into a respectful question
Use the source to make outreach specific without presuming a decision. Ask whether a publicly advertised service is a current priority, or whether the observed setup remains accurate. A rep should be able to show the evidence if the MSP asks how the account was selected.
Prospectopia presents dated account evidence for vendors selling to and through the MSP channel. Category coverage and recurring delivery rates are being revalidated, so inspect your own category before treating historical counts as a current commitment. Measure qualified conversations and partner outcomes separately from signals delivered.
